Looking at the increasing popularity of Droid devices, Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. (MMI) launched another Droid phone called Droid 4. The new 4G-enabled smartphone will be marketed through Verizon Communication Inc.’s (VZ) wireless store in the upcoming weeks.

The new 4G-enabled handset is based on the popular Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and can also be upgraded to the latest Android 4.0 (Ice cream Sandwich) operating platform. The new smartphone is one of the slimmest handset currently available in the market and also features QWERTY keyboard along with an 8 megapixel camera, which supports HD video recordings. The phone is also compatible with the company’s Lapdock device, hence providing more options to the user.

The new handset supports 1.2 GHz dual-core processor coupled with a MotoCast application feature, which facilitates faster downloading speed and remote access to music, pictures and videos on home or work computers. Moreover, the device comes with a 16 GB on-board memory and a 4G Verizon Wireless connection that offers lightening fast internet speed.

After the successful launch of DROID RAZR 4G-enabled smartphones in December, 2011, the company recently launched DROID RAZR MAXX, which will also be available through Verizon Wireless stores in the next few weeks. The new device features improved battery life as compared with other Droid phones and will be available at $299.99 with a new two-year Verizon Wireless 4G network plan.

In the fourth quarter of 2011, the company sold nearly 5.3 million smartphones versus 4.8 million smartphones in the third quarter of 2011. We believe that such an upside in smartphone sales is primarily due to the success of the company’s Droid device line up.

Currently, Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. has a Zacks#3 Rank, implying a short-term Hold rating on the stock.

Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., based in Libertyville, Illinois, is a leading mobile phone and smartphone manufacturer. Moreover, the company is one of the leaders in the set-top box category.
