Rockwell Collins Inc. (COL) has introduced new mobile and online applications ("apps") for its Ascend flight information solutions. These include the Ascend Flight Manager app for the iPad and an Ascend Dashboard integrated desktop solution.

The new Ascend Flight Manager iPad app provides direct access to the Ascend Flight Manager online performance-based flight planning tool. Moreover, it provides strength to the Ascend Flight Operations System (“FOS”) schedule and dispatch solution for time-saving, paperless operations. Also, due to its innovative electronic expense report feature, the iPad app allows users to take pictures of receipts and immediately submit them electronically for greater workflow efficiency.

The new Flight Manager Ascend Dashboard acts as an integrated desktop solution for directors of Flight Operations. The Dashboard provides view of all the aircraft in the fleet, current and upcoming trips, the status of electronic database updates, and fleet maintenance monitoring at-a-glance.

Ascend is appropriate to the size and needs of an individual flight department. Operators can select the tools and services that fit their fleets’ respective mission profile. Overall, the full range of Ascend flight information solutions includes: FOS schedule and dispatch software, regional and international trip support, fuel pricing and service information, aircraft Information Manager wireless content updates, including FMS databases, flight Watch for dedicated meteorologist services, and personalized expert services such as ground handling and compliance assistance.

Rockwell Collins is the foremost global supplier of communications and avionics equipment for both commercial and military customers. The company is witnessing a rejuvenated business jet market with rising original equipment and improving aftermarket fortunes. Furthermore, a strong balance sheet, incremental dividend, and an ongoing share repurchase program add visibility to the story.

However, this is offset by the U.S. government’s delayed funding authorizations, program execution risk, dependence on international sales, high exposure to fixed price contracts and high research and development overhead. The company presently retains a short-term Zacks #3 Rank (Hold) that corresponds with our long-term Neutral recommendation on the stock.

Rockwell Collins is a pioneer in the development and deployment of innovative communication and aviation electronic solutions for both commercial and government applications. It has expertise in flight deck avionics, cabin electronics, mission communications, information management, and simulation and training. The company mainly competes with Raytheon Company (RTN).
