MarketWatch started a Fantasy Earnings Trader game on 1/9/2012.  You get weekly picks to choose to go long or short.  What you select for Monday's open  ... you're stuck with until Friday's close.

The picks for week 1 were:

AA, AYI, INFY, JPM, LEN, MTB, PSMT, SCHN, SJR, SMSC, SNX, VOXX, WDFC, ZEP, ZIP

The available picks for week2 (beginning 1/16/2012) are:

AXP, BAC, BK, BLK, C, CHKP, CMA, CREE, EBAY, FASTFCX, FFIV, FITB, FRX, GE, GS, IBM, INTC, JCI, LUV, MSFT, SCHW, SLB, STT, UNH, UNP, USB, WFC, XLNX

I have already run the numbers through my spreadsheets (grinning) and I am running the charts.  I am also going through the S&P report, the Thompson Reuters Report, as well as each companies last two quarterly reports and its annual report .  I will be happy to share my findings here and answer any questions posted below.

As a result of my work I have several ways to "work" these stocks:

( a) stocks that will fail to meet, meet, or beat earnings (this is educated guessing and highly RISKY in that  company management knows "stuff" not yet available to us average joes )

( b) short term picks ( 3 to 6 month targets) Bull or Bear

and (c) long term picks ( 1 year or more ) Bull or Bear.

There may be one, or more, companies that will qualify as candidates for all three scenarios.

    Happy investing

Just the fact that there is going to be increased web searches and web chatter in these company names and stock symbols means more hits for MSFT's "Bing", Google, and Yahoo!'s search (also powered by MSFT's Bing) ... etc., etc. as well as opportunity to see more advertising dollars put to work ... Will those ads transition to sales, which is the hoped for outcome?

Smiling ... while I prefer "educated guessing" where I have done my homework, to guessing ... or outright gambling, here's another opinion on "betting" on earnings:

From MarketWatch pages: "

Betting on earnings is a fool’s game"

From my analysis and the latest SNX report, SNX qualifies as a company for all three of the scenarios above.

Well ... I've run through my spreadsheets, run through the charts, checked the annual reports, quarterly reports, and the news. I've selected 8 longs and 4 shorts from the 29 week 2 picks ... and I'll explain below as MarketWatch's Fantasy Earnings week 2 progresses. I'll also explain below the companies I didn't select and why.
I know going "all in" with only the minimum 3 picks out of 29, long, or short, or a combination thereof has the potential to win big. I am thinking the greater selection reduces the risk of an error on my part ... plus, the management of every company knows "stuff" we average joes, and janes, do not have access to ( or shouldn't have access to ) ... and so I plan for ACCURACY in my 12 pick selection to statistically beat out all 3 pick selection combinations. --- Smiling, we'll find out by Friday 1/20/2012.
