Another new item contributing to today's meltdown :

" North Korean envoy warns war could erupt soon "

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6523NM20100603?loomia_ow=t0:s0:a49:g43:r1:c0.160000:b34592072:z0

.... former United States President George W. Bush in his State of the Union Address on January 29, 2002 and often repeated throughout the rest of his stay in office, describing governments that he accused of helping terrorism and seeking weapons of mass destruction. President Bush named Iran, Iraq and North Korea as the axis of evil.

Now, evidence is conclusive that the ship was sunk by a N. Korean (DPRK) torpedo ... however, the presumption is that the torpedo was fired by a DPRK submarine ... whick the DPRK denies. The cash strapped DPRK is a weapons merchant to whomever is willing to buy and able to pay... As such, the DPRK, has sold torpedos to other countries ...

The smoking gun, who fired the torpedo, is the unanswered question.

May I suggest a better question; Does anyone else, having a DPRK torpedo and either submarines or modified surface ship launch capability with either a reason to fire at S. Korean military shipping ... or possibly a " diversion" ???

My suggestion, before going to war, is that the DPRK needs to present every bit of info on torpedoes sold and any serial numbers or other identifying marks that might help identify an alternative suspect.

... and why isn't anyone else suggesting that course of action?

How many times have wars started because of flawed information, skewed information, blunders, mistakes or biases?

Here's one you might remember, Gulf of Tonkin:

Also, I wouldn't hold my breath on Kim Jung Il using openness and transparency with the international community to clear this matter up.

As a former Military Intelligence Officer, I revel in conspiracy theories.

The 'Axis of Evil' was an unfortunate fluke where a sound bite began to drive policy.

North Korea was added almost as an afterthought and was expected to be edited out of the speech.

The greater and more concerning question is:

"How is it that a submarine of a fifth-rate power was able to penetrate a U.S.-South Korean naval exercise and sink a ship that was designed for anti-submarine warfare?"

There are also valid concerns that this may have been a "false flag" attack

The plot thickens.

I've explained my position here:

As an interesting footnote to history,

David Frum, the true author of the 'axis of evil' sound bite, was recently fired from the American Enterprise Institure (AEI) for being too straightforward in assessing the GOPs "Waterloo" concerning the health care bill.

Thanks for your replies ... JoeCole and InvestmentMAGE. Great additional info. I had a my own upfront, close, and personal intro to NK military and insurgents that you'll never read about in the news.
