GNI = This is a great company - a virtual money maker. The company manages the iron ore deposites and leases for mining. Has a total staff of 10 folks only.
I will buy in my portfolio on dips for long term hold. Good dividend yield

Canadian Bug Boosts Demand For U.S. Timber
By PATRICK CAIN, INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY
Posted 07/08/2010 06:04 PM ET
Timber producers in British Columbia are losing a battle with beetles. The pesky bug has damaged forests and exports. That's good news for U.S. firms such as Rayonier (RYN), a primarily Southern timber real estate investment trust that offers investors a 4.4% dividend yield.

"The timber cycle is very tied to housing, but I do believe we will see structural shifts in the next cycle," said Anna Torma, an analyst for Soleil Securities. "The structural shift is that historically one-third of lumber has come from Canada. You'll see a lot less B.C. timber coming into the U.S. market for the next 60 years. That puts increased demand on the Southern timber."

The beetle isn't a concern to Rayonier, as the arthropod likes a specific type of old tree that isn't used in the South.

That will help Rayonier as the housing industry struggles. Once the sector picks up, the firm is an interesting play on housing, she adds.

This is only one of Rayonier's three main segments.

The strongest lately is its high performance fibers. This is a high-end product that's a specialty niche market.

Few competitors exist, making it a rather safe segment. Performance fibers offer stable margins, and that provides a bulk of the cash flow that creates the stable dividend despite the overall tough economic climate, Torma says.

The third segment is land it owns that eventually will be developed.

Rayonier has about 200,000 acres that Torma said is "higher, better use" land. This is prized property that will ultimately be developed around the I-95 corridor, she says.

Shares are currently finding support at the 40-week moving average and resistance at the 10-week average.

I WILL BE BUYER ON DIPS AND THEN HOLD FOR DIVIDEND YIELD OR BUY SOME NOW AND ADD ON DIPS Please do your own home work

Seriously, what makes GNI a good buy for the long term?

What I read was that the trust, "will dissolve on April 6, 2015, 20 years after the death of the last survivor named in the original December 7, 1906 Trust Agreement. At the end of the Trust on April 6, 2015, the certificates of beneficial interest (shares) in the Trust will cease to trade on the NYSE and thereafter will represent only the right to receive certain distributions payable to the certificate holders of record at the time of the termination of the Trust".
One person doing the math figures the stock, instead of 95 per shr, should be around $50- 55 a share - 5 years of div plus $8 at the end when trust cease to trade with dividends and final payout.

Is this correct? Any homework done on this stock?

Howdy, rjm77me!

where did you find info GNI - I have hard time finding it.

Please note basic information about Great Northern Iron Ore Properties (GNI) and other entities publicly traded in the U.S. is included in their filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. In this case, you might wish to review GNI's most recent SEC Form 10-K (http://tinyurl.com/238w83a).

Good luck!

I am glad that few folks read 10-K - I do not and that teaches me a valuable lesson
I am going short GNI some time in 2014 - I added to my PDA. Good information is money in bank. Going short now is risky - some one may offer to buy out GNI and Glacier Bay company from COP based on valuation of ore in ground. I do not know enough and when in doubt ONE WORD DO NOT TOUCH - THERE ARE 101 BETTER OPTIONS
Thanks to both of you

rym77m3 and MackTheKnife

Mac got ahead of me. I read it from the official site of GNI which is at www.gniop.com. On the left hand side on the site is a link to the termination subject.

By the way, rym77me thanks for the comment on the blog I wrote about Probabilities.

GNI refuses to give up any price on down side. I stayed away as the info did not jive.
RYN did move up and is pulling back
