I have written three times about NLY for using in 401K type portfolio.
It has held steady during this last 10 days of down turn for following reasons
It just paid 65c dividend.
Higher Bond Prices Help High-Yielding Mortgage REITs

While there are many factors to look at when evaluating mortgage REITs, investors should make sure they know and understand the track record of managers before buying into these stocks. Annaly Capital Mgmnt (NYSE: NLY), currently yielding 16%, might fit this bill, as managers have consistently produced strong results, while taking advantage of lower interest rates. Some other mortgage REITs to investigate further are MFA Financial (NYSE: MFA) and Hatteras Financial (NYSE: HTS ), yielding 12% and 16% respectively. Not all REITs in the space throw off huge yields though; Redwood Trust (NYSE: RWT ) a residential and commercial mortgage REIT currently distributes a modest 7% annually. American Capital Agency (NASDAQ: AGNC ) yields over 20%, making it the highest yielding stock in the sector.

Just my views
FTR has lot of debt and taking on more debt due to Verizon (VZ 26.81, +0.53) completed its $8.6 billion spinoff of its local wireline operations to Frontier Communications (FTR 7.35, -0.34).I will not use FTR as dividend play for next 3 months.
TEF looks good and Euro stocks will be more volatile for some time. I do not know much about TEF at this time - I will check out more about TEF. It can offer stock price gain with market swing. Slightly higher risk and potential reward as stock price goes up. Dividend play for TEF to me just an icing which can disappera if stock goes down in short term. Decent risk and reward here for TEF

10 mortgage REITs initiated at Wunderlich

Wunderlich has initiated coverage on 10 mortgage REITs today, and recommend purchase of five that are invested primarily in agency-issued mortgage-backed securities for both yield and price appreciation. They believe investors can arbitrage both FOMC accommodation and the policy initiatives of the Obama Administration through these stocks because re-stabilizing the housing finance market is dependent on offering a value proposition in the secondary mortgage market that enhances the safety and soundness of regulated financial institutions. Firm says their top pick is American Capital Agency (AGNC), followed by Annaly Capital Management (NLY), Hatteras Financial (HTS) and Cypress Sharpridge (CYS) and Two Harbors (TWO), all initiated with Buys. Firm also initiates Capstead Mortgage (CMO), Chimera Investment Corporation (CIM), Anworth Mortgage Asset Corporation (ANH), MFA Financial (MFA), and Invesco Mortgage Capital Inc. (IVR) with Holds.

Looking at the chart, I will not be a buyer at the current price.
I will double check my views
It did report good numbers
02-May-11 08:47 ET In Play Wunderlich believes metrics reported speak to the stability of dividends in place at mortgage REITs (17.84 ) : Wunderlich notes that with fewer than half of the mortgage REITs under coverage having reported 1Q11 earnings and current market trends, they believe that metrics reported speak to the stability of dividends in place. They expect that market trends could support higher debt to equity ratios going forward, because they believe the collateral is relatively dear in the marketplace. However, concerns over the end of the current round of quantitative easing could result in a tendency to drain collateral from the market to shore up liquidity on bank balance sheets. Wider spreads and adequate liquidity will support ROEs averaging over 17% in 2011, by their estimation, and could provide price support with the potential for multiple expansion.

28-Apr-11 14:59 ET In Play American Capital Agency 1Q11 follow-up: much bigger and a little better too - JMP Securities (28.95 +0.17) : JMP Securities notes AGNC reported 1Q core EPS of $1.30 on April 25 showing 3% improvement over the prior quarter and topping their $1.25 estimate while posting a core return on equity of 19.5%. Firm says the remarkable thing about this accomplishment is that it came in a quarter in which the company doubled its common share count, equity capital base, and MBS portfolio with two public offerings that raised $1.6 bln of new capital, which in most cases would have resulted in some near-term earnings dilution. Firm says despite the longer duration fixed-rate component of the MBS portfolio increasing significantly in 1Q to about 80%, AGNC also aggressively stepped up its hedging strategies and estimates that it had a net duration of 0.6 at March 31 versus a longer 1.1 at December 31.

So the yield is safe. Can the government continue to protect the REITs?
Do you see a political risk? (other than the end of QE)
