DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc.'s (GMCR) fiscal third-quarter profit more than tripled as revenue continued to soar, driven by strong sales growth for K-Cup portion packs.
Shares were up 2.9% to $90.67 in after-hours trading as the company raised its full-year forecast. The stock has more than tripled over the past 12 months.
The company now expects full-year earnings of $1.63 to $1.67 a share on sales growth of 98% to 100%, from its April view of $1.43 to $1.50 a share, on sales growth of 82% to 87%. For the fourth quarter, the company forecast earnings of 44 cents to 48 cents a share on sales growth of 100% to 105%. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters most recently predicted per-share earnings of 43 cents on revenue growth of 88% to $703 million.
The producer of coffee, tea and hot chocolate under various brands has seen sales surge amid a recent acquisition streak. Green Mountain also makes Keurig single-cup brewing units and has been expanding the range of beverages for the device, including offerings from Starbucks Corp. (SBUX) and Dunkin' Brands Group Inc. (DNKN).
Green Mountain posted a profit of $56.3 million, or 37 cents a share, up from $18.4 million, or 13 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding items such as acquisition-related expenses and debt-related charges, per-share earnings rose to 49 cents from 21 cents. Revenue more than doubled to $717.2 million.
In May, the company forecast a profit of 34 cents to 38 cents on sales growth of 90% to 95%.
Gross margin widened to 36.8% from 34.4%, despite higher expenses.
Net sales from Keurig brewers and accessories rose 66%, while sales from the K-Cup portion packs for the coffee maker more than doubled.
