Mosaic Theory

What Does It Mean?

What Does Mosaic Theory Mean?

A method of analysis used by security analysts to gather information about a corporation. Mosaic theory involves collecting public, non-public and non-material information about a company in order to determine the underlying value of the company's securities and to enable the analyst to make recommendations to clients based on that information.

Investopedia explains Mosaic Theory

Some see this style of analysis as a misuse of insider information, but the CFA Institute (formerly known as AIMR) has recognized mosaic theory as a valid method of analysis. However, analysts using this method should disclose the details of the information and methodology they used to arrive at their recommendation.

I would call this 'All Source Intelligence Analysis'

Or as I've often said,

"Intelligence is where you find it"

I got the best tip ever (not stock related) in the alley behind my house.

Have you found any web sites, or other unusual sources of information/intelligence?

Why not share them here?

I will be sharing some Intelligence analysis tools with you, that adapt well to the stock market. If there seems to be any interest. Recommend this post if you want me to follow up.

Stay tuned.

Good Trading,

MAGE

"[The mosaic philosophy] is not incredibly well-known. It's arcane, it's esoteric, it's limited to a very few people,"

If analysts are gathering some non public information does that mean they are getting this by contacting company people by one way or the other?

The professions swap information just like we do.

There is a fine line between 'analysis' and insider trading.

Never heard of mosaic theory. What you describe sounds like corporate espionage and business intelligence or something. Keep the reporting on this though, it sounds interesting.

Hi Mage,

Interesting post. If you don't mind sharing, what was" the best tip ever" that you mentioned? Looking forward to more arcane, esoteric, rare intrigue...A.K.

Hello ak3583,

That's a great question, thanks for asking.

The tip was that my neighbor's brother was in a Reserve Unit that I was interested in, in KC MO.

I was graduating from Army ROTC in the Army Reserves,
I wanted Military Intelligence (MI) Branch, however, much to my dismay, they were giving me Artillery Branch.
I was chatting with my neighbor and he teased me that his brother and I were "weekend warriors". Out of idle curiosity I asked him what his brother did in the Reserves. It turned out he was in a Psychological Operations (PSYOP) unit in Kansas City, MO.
I went to their next drill for an "informational interview" (see What Color is your Parachute).
They had no openings, but another unit was relocating to St. Louis, and had openings.
I was transferred to MI and it has had a great impact on my life.

I also learned that I was my own career manager.

Cordially,

MAGE
