How the Scores are Calculated

Stocks' P&P ratings calculated based on the aggregate input of the People And Picks Community. The proportion of buy to sell ratings, recency of analysis, and the average score of the users who rate it favorably all factor into a score of one to five stars.

People's P&P ratings are based upon their ability to beat the S&P 500 with their stock picks. A stock with a buy rating that outperforms the S&P by 10% earns the user 10 points. A stock with a sell rating that underperforms by the same amount also nets 10 points. The points accumulated in this way amount to 2/3 of the P&P score.

Accuracy is the simple percentage of the number of times you have correctly rated a stock to outperform (buy) or underperform the market (sell). Your accuracy makes up 1/3 of your score. Maintaining a high level of accuracy with a greater number of stocks is statistically more difficult as you hold more and more open ratings. So there is an accuracy bonus for users with more than 20 picks.

Once the points and accuracy are totaled, a user's score is applied a percentile. So a user with a P&P score of 95 is in the top 5% of all users.
